The artists of Amalgam Collection today revealed the first images of their Ferrari 812 Competizione model, the most recent development in their 1:8 scale flagship range. Ferrari’s final naturally aspirated V12 road car has been precisely replicated in the workshops of the Bristol-based company, who are now accepting deposits for the first batch of models nearing completion.
Amalgam’s astonishingly detailed and realistic large-scale models are already well known to Ferrari owners worldwide, and the 812 Competizione further extends the close cooperation between Ferrari and Amalgam that has been long established since 1998. Bespoke models, precisely replicating every aspect of their owner’s specifications, will be offered to every Ferrari customer ordering a new 812 Competizione from their Ferrari Dealership, whilst Amalgam will also offer a limited 199-piece edition of the car in its launch guise, Grigio Competizione with a Giallo Fly racing livery.
Working from CAD data supplied directly by Ferrari, the artisans develop a prototype, meticulously scaling down the data to ensure that the details are brought to life in miniature. Moulds are created for the individual parts, with metal, carbon fibre and rubber used to create each piece of the intricate puzzle, while some parts are produced by 3-D printers. The 812 Competizione model necessitated over 3000 hours of development and the resulting prototype only received the approval of the Ferrari designers and engineers once they were fully satisfied with its accuracy of representation. Measuring over 58cm (23in) long, each subsequent model will take 300 hours to cast, fit, fettle, paint and assemble, capturing every last detail of the car, including its 330 P4-inspired rear spoiler and complex aerodynamic architecture.
The Founder of Amalgam Collection, Sandy Copeman said “The target is to produce a model that looks exactly like the real car. There should be nothing that gives the game away,” says Copeman. “If you can take a high-resolution photograph and put it in front of somebody, and they have no idea whether they’re looking at a model or the real car, then we’ve done our job.”
Ferrari’s ultimate expression of an extreme front-engine Berlinetta, the new 812 Competizione hones the essential characteristics of their critically acclaimed 812 Superfast to new levels. Limited to a production run of 999 cars, the 812 Competizione has been designed to epitomise Ferrari’s substantial 70 plus years of experience on the world’s circuits, encapsulating the core of every one of their sports cars to deliver blend of performance, form and functionality. From design to build, Ferrari has created this work of art as a homage to their own history and out of dedication to their most passionate collectors and connoisseurs.
Copeman continues: “Without emotion, without passion, we couldn't create the objects we make. Ferrari is the most emotive car manufacturer, and the 812 Competizione marks the end of an era for the naturally aspirated V12. We feel immensely privileged to be collaborating on a such a project and are delighted that our model captures every aspect of the original so precisely.”
